RICK'S AG ROUNDUP


     Those nasty troublesome weeds! You try washing them out, spraying them out, scrubbing them out, bleaching them out, but they just keep coming back. Well, something like that anyway.

     If you would like to learn more about the nature of weeds and how to control them, don´t miss our weed management school coming up on Tuesday, January 26. It will be held at the Hoisington Activity Center, just north of Highway 4 on Susank Road.
Registration, coffee and doughnuts will begin at 8:45 with the program starting at 9:00 a.m.
     Speakers will be: Dallas Peterson, Extension Weed Scientist with K-State Research & Extension from Manhattan; Curtis Thompson, herbicide specialist from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Bob Wolf, Extension Application Technology Specialist in Agricultural Engineering at K-State and Brian Olson, area Agronomist from Colby.
     Topics to be covered will be Integrated Weed Management and Weed Biology, Weed Seedling Identification, Glyphosate Resistance and Management Issues, Weed Control in field Crops, and Spray application Technology.
     A folder with weed management information will be provided for participants. The program should qualify for at least 5 hours of pest management Certified Crop Advisor credits and 6 credit hours for commercial pesticide applicator re-certification.
     The cost is $20 per person and checks should be made out to the Barton County Extension Council. Reservations are needed by Thursday, January 21.      The school is open to the public, including farmers, land owners, ag chemical
dealers, county weed personnel, crop consultants and others.    
    

 

IRRIGATION TRAINING
    Larned will be the site for a KanSched Irrigation scheduling training on January 20. This is a computer program to help irrigators make more efficient water timing decisions. It begins at 1:30 in the afternoon at the J. A. Haas building on the fairgrounds and should run 2-3 hours. There is no cost but please call 620-285-
6901 in advance they can plan for enough handouts.  
   

COVER YOUR ACRES
     I still have room for more riders to the Cover Your Acres Technology and No-Till Conference in Oberlin. I am headed up on the 18th and will stay overnight and return on the evening of the 19th.      Our office will be closed on Monday, January 18 in honor of the late Dr. Martin Luther King.

     The 14th Annual Kansas Precision Agriculture Conference will be held in Salina, January 21-22. It begins at 8:00 a.m. registration on the 21st and ends at noon the next day. Registration fee is $100. This is an outstanding technology conference....
The annual meeting of the Barton County Conservation District will be held on Saturday evening, January 23 at the Community College cafeteria. Call Pam Tucker at

Pawnee County Extension will be hosting a land leasing and grain price outlook meeting on Thursday, January 21 at 10:00 a.m. A lunch will be served and sponsored by the Pawnee County Co-op but reservations need to be made in advance by calling 620-285-6901.... The two Water Issues Forums which were postponed due to weather in December have been rescheduled. They will be held on February 3 in Wichita and February 4 in Hays. The cost is $10 and further information can be obtained from the Kansas Water Office in Topeka. I will be going to the Wichita meeting if anyone would like to ride.... A Cattlemen´s coffee shop meeting will be held January 20 at 1:00 at the North Central Kansas Technical College in Beloit. The presenter will be Samuel D. Fuhlendorf from Oklahoma State University will talk on the use of fire on rangeland. RSVP by calling 785-524-4482. Registration is $5. ... The Kansas Grazers Winter Conference will be held on Saturday, January 23 in McPherson. Well-known Colorado rancher, Kit Pharo will be on the program.... A Pasture Brush n´ Weed Control and Pre-Calving Update will be held on Wednesday, January 27 in Lyons from 10:30 until 2:30. Call 620-257-5131 for lunch reservations by the 20th..... No-Till on the Plains will hold their Winter Conference in Salina, January 26-27. Go to www.notill.org for details. I hear the AIM Workshop on the 28th, following the conference is very good as well... The National Western  Stock Show will be held January 9-24 in Denver.... On January 20, the K-State Pollution Prevention Institute will host a free workshop at Olathe for small businesses trying to help reduce solvent emissions.... The Kansas Sustainability Conference will be held in Manhattan on January 29-30. The idea is to sustain higher education and foster networking.... A meat processing workshop will be held on Saturday, January 30 at K-State. Learn about processed and cured meats form the best. Call Liz Boyle at 85-532-1247 for details... scheduled for San Antonio, Texas, January 29-30.
