LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas farmers planted more than a half-million acres of winter wheat, and the crop is being threatened by the spread of a fungus.

The University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture said Friday that wheat stripe rust was spotted in Cross County in late January. This week, the rust has been reported in nine counties: Arkansas, Crittenden, Cross, Jefferson, Lee, Lonoke, Prairie, St. Francis and Woodruff.

Agriculture officials say in areas where the fungus is more prevalent, the entire plant is affected and lower leaves have already died.

Wet conditions favor rust development and rains in recent weeks have likely hastened its spread.

Early fungicide application can help check the spread.

The Arkansas winter wheat crop is harvested in June.
