Growers take advantage of Ark. conditions

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas farmers continue to take advantage of the ideal planting weather.

The University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture says about half of the state's rice crop has been planted, compared to 18 percent a week ago. Some growers have to replant portions of their crop because birds have been helping themselves to the rice seed.

Corn is 84 percent planted, compared with 59 percent a week ago and sorghum is 58 percent planted, more than double from last week's report.

Soybeans and cotton are planted later than rice and corn. Ten percent of the soybean crop is in the ground and cotton is 1 percent planted.

The drought that plagued the state last year has abated, with only part of Miller County classified as abnormally dry.
