Recently I received a call where
the client had found an abandoned baby squirrel in the yard. “What should they do with it” was the
question they had for me.

Research shows the media has an effect on consumer perception. Recent media attention on animal welfare issues has triggered consumers to purchase less meat, and to lose confidence in the way our food is grown.

Last Fall, 5th Grade teacher Carol Budde, from the Walton Rural Life Education Center started something new. She enrolled her students in the 4-H Swine Project. These 22 youth engrossed themselves in learning more about the swine industry. Extension helped with this project. All of the youth had to be pork quality assured plus trained in order to be able to sell their animals at the project’s completion. 4-Hers account for slightly more than 1% of the swine raised for meat production, therefore they have to maintain the same standards of production as the rest of the industry. |

Last week I had the opportunity to attend an educational conference in Baltimore, Maryland. It’s focus was on programing designed to reach women involved in agriculture. Following the conference, the attendees were invited to watch as Deputy Secretary of Agriculture, Kathleen Merrigan, celebrated the roles women have played in agriculture history. She had a panel of 4 women, each representing a different segment of agriculture. It was titled, “Women involved with agriculture, rangeland, and forestry - challenges & opportunities which helped shape their passion and commitment and involvement in their careers.”

Just Kidding Around
Editor's note: Check out Jonie's blog about the ups and downs of kidding out meat goats at The day started at 2:00 a.m. for Mr. Farmer and myself. We checked the does, and saw what appeared to be a dead baby goat near a doe having another baby. We went to pick it up to get rid of it when we barely heard it make a noise. It was almost gone, but we warmed it up with vigerous rubbing in our heated room, and soaked it in a bucket of very warm water for almost an hour. |

Just Kidding
My two oldest daughters asked their dad if they could take meatgoats in 4-H. This is the man who told me soon after we were married that I could bring home all the animals I wanted to the farm as long as I didn't bring home any goats. He loves his dog, cattle, and horses.

With the start of a new year comes the realization of how quickly 2009 flew by. It was an interesting year to say the least, and not without a few bumps in the road, but still a good year. A few memories I will take with me are: |

Last week, I received two calls regarding caterpillars crawling across roads in large numbers. In all honesty, I thought they were referring to army worms. However when I made the road trip out to the field, I was quite surprised to find large 3-4 inch caterpillars, somewhat similar to the tomato worm pest we find in our gardens.

With graduations happening everyone, I was not immune to rushing around, as my second oldest child graduated from 8th grade this year. Eighth grade graduation isn’t near as big of deal as high school, but several of our neighbors also had children graduating from 8th grade, so we had a small neighborhood BBQ to celebrate the event.

Two weeks ago I was at the Women Managing the Farm conference that was held in the Hutchinson. In addition to being part of the planning committee, I also was a presenter for two of the sessions. One of my topics was balancing work and family life.
Not my expertise by any means but the topic hit home to me plus I had missed the committee meeting where they had assigned the task to me. |
