Oklahoma farmers dealing with drought, freeze damage to wheat, lack of custom harvesters

(MCT) -- As if farmers didn't already have enough problems, now Kansas custom cutters are saying they may not come into Oklahoma or Texas because of poor wheat conditions.

Drought and freeze have damaged the wheat crops in both states to the point many cutters are making the decision to cut their losses. Officials estimate Oklahoma's crops will be about half of its normal yield.

Georgia's wheat crop may see heavy loss

MOULTRIE (MCT) -- Without a respite in precipitation that allows combines into wheat fields, growers are looking at a potential disaster for the crop, which already has been damaged by wet conditions.

The delay in harvesting the winter wheat crop also has prevented farmers from planting cotton and peanuts on land where wheat is now in the fields.

Wheat maturing ahead of a year ago

WICHITA (MCT) - Kansas' wheat is maturing well ahead of last year with 91 percent of the crop reaching the heading stage, according to a report issued this week by the Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service.

Spring 2009 weather has not been as conducive to the development of fusarium head blight, or head scab in the winter wheat crop as it was in 2008. Many wheat farmers, however, are not likely to forget last year’s instances of head scab, which caused great difficulty for farmers trying to deliver wheat to the grain elevator during harvest.
