Plans to cut income taxes in Kansas shifts burden to farmers and ranchers

The Tea Party has swept across politics like a prairie fire and seems to be gaining even more momentum in a volatile election year. Here in Kansas, Gov. Sam Brownback is making an example of what a Tea Party nation would look like with draconian spending cuts. But he’s not stopping at spending. He has also proposed eliminating income taxes for small businesses and reducing personal income tax to stimulate economic growth – a plan that he hopes will lead to complete elimination of income taxes altogether in Kansas.

USDA and the Kansas wheat crop

There’s no doubt about it. The soaking rains over the past couple of weeks have been a last-minute lifesaver for the Kansas wheat crop. The consensus, though, is that USDA is a little too optimistic in their first-ever projection of Kansas wheat production.

USDA today said they think the crop is 340.0 million bushels with a 40.0 bushel yield. While that’s down from last year’s crop at 356.0 million bushels at 40.0 bushels/acre, that’s over the latest industry estimate of 333.3 million bushels at a 40.8 bushel yield estimated by last week’s Wheat Quality Council hard winter wheat tour.

Wheat Crop Tour - Day 2

The second day of the Wheat Quality Council's Hard Winter Wheat Tour once again pointed to a less than fabulous crop this year with yield estimates coming in slightly under last year.
 
Yield calculations averaged 39.8 bu/acre for the second day of the tour, down from 40.9 bu/acre last year. Crop scouts left Colby early Wednesday morning and convened in Wichita later that evening, taking samples from 212 fields in Kansas and Oklahoma along the way.
